Daily Tip: Save Gas, Drive Less

Unless you live in a big city with an efficient public transportation system, you probably have to drive. A lot. Here are a few ways you can drive less, save on gas and cut your personal CO2 emissions all at the same time.

Walk. It may not feasible to run your errands by walking, but there are times when you can walk instead of driving, especially when going from store to store at a strip mall or shopping area.

Just park the car. Instead of driving ’round and ’round the parking lot looking for that really close spot, park further away. There are always empty spaces, you’ll get a little exercise, and reduce your chances of dings.

Combine trips. If you’re making a run to the grocery store see if you can make other stops along the way. Can you pick up your dry cleaning or stop by the post office on the same trip? This will save on individual trips but just make sure to plan to take the most efficient route from place to place.

Take public transportation. The bus may not stop right out side your house, but you might be able to drive to a park and ride that links up with a public transportation hub. Even if it doesn’t make sense for your daily commute, hop on the bus or the train when heading to highly congested downtown shopping areas or to sporting events. It will save you a trip in the car, and you’ll also save on parking.

Amy says: When I run out specificially to get something, I inevitably forget it. To avoid making extra trips back out, I’ll first make a list of everything I need to pick up. This not only saves on gas when I’m driving, but also saves on time.

Have you heard about hypermileing? My husband does it with his ford taurus and it saved alot of gallons of gas when he drives. I’ve heard pros and cons about it.
