Discovery Launches Green Television Network
Discovery Communications launches the first 24-hour television network dedicated to green lifestyle programming.
Discovery is getting back to its roots with a return to nature programming and is renewing efforts in "celebrating, preserving and protecting the planet." That push has shown success in Discovery's new series, Planet Earth, which premiered in late March and is pulling in strong numbers. They're hoping those numbers carry over to their new channel, PlanetGreen.
PlanetGreen will feature programming ranging in topics from organic lifestyles and healthy living, to green design and architecture, to green-tech and eco-travel. Discovery has committed $50 million to produce original content for PlanetGreen and to develop an extensive, interactive online presence. The Discovery Home Channel will switch over to PlanetGreen in 2008.
This announcement follows on the heels of a regularly scheduled, weekly block of green programming beginning next week on the Sundance channel. And like the Sundance Channel, Discovery will create an advisory board to advise program development and corporate partnerships.
This is a smart move for Discovery Communications to re-brand their home channel and make it green to capitalize on a growing audience segment. They also won't have to go very far to find new, green programming as this announcement will no doubt draw content developers and production companies to create eco-minded shows (if they haven't already). And those that don't get on PlanetGreen are sure to find homes elsewhere as other networks and cable channels scramble to gain market share in this green wave.

This is really a big step in the right direction. Television reaches such a large audiance, and unlike the internet, people won’t have to seek out green information to be exposed to it. Can’t wait!

I'm all for this.. How can people seek green lifestyle information if they aren't sure what to look for in the first place? It's nice to have a channel dedicated to all topics green to make it easier to be exposed to new ideas. I hope this channel will go High Def.

I watched a couple of the pilot shows and was impressed but I couldn’t remember where I saw them. I watch Public TV, Animal Planet and TLC as my favorite stations other than ABC. When I tried to locate the green network I couldn’t remember where I had seen it.
This is important! Do more advertising! I was looking for a whole new channel. Now I know, finally, after searching unsuccessfully on the internet for a really long time where to find this programming.
We need to get this information out there NOW to save this planet for our children. We need to inform our children so they can be active participants in their very real near future.
This channel can be a force to rally the public to make our government and our private sector make a difference. We, as indiviuals, also need to stop whining about the high cost of energy and do something constructive to make a difference in reducing our very conspicuous consumption.
The Carbon Footprint episodes that I saw were eye openning to say the least. Everyone has to stop burying their heads in the sand and make the small simple choices to change themselves and this world or the end will be sooner than we think.
