David Suzuki hits the road for the environment

David Suzuki FoundationDavid Suzuki FoundationDavid Suzuki, Canadian scientist and long time environmentalist is on the road trying to put the environment back on the political agenda in Canada.

The "If YOU were Prime Minister…" tour began February 1. Suzuki and his team are travelling from coast to coast asking fellow Canadians their thoughts on the current state of affairs.

ZNet recently interviewed Suzuki about his efforts. A few things Suzuki would do if he were Prime Minister: stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, develop a national energy policy, and begin cutting emissions, now.

We're stuck, basically, providing for the United States. That's what the oil sands project is all about: providing the States with a more dependable source of oil than the Middle East.

He told ZNet that the economy eclipsed the environment as an important issue in the late 1980's. He said that the Canadian government must get things back on track, especially in regards to energy in order to provide its citizens for future generations.

The good news is there's a lot of good news out there. The bad news is that our so called leaders in business and government aren't interested, they just want to keep doing things the same old way.

How's the road tour going? Unfortunately it looks like the blog lost steam around Feb. 5. and there's very few online updates, but assuming the group is meeting the tour dates listed they'll be wrapping up around March 2.

But people are following and chiming in with answers to the big question through videos posted on You Tube.

And yes, the tour is carbon neutral - the organization is buying carbon credits to offset the travel emissions generated by the cross country RV trip.

Suzuki also has several other action items through the David Suzuki Foundation website. You can take the Nature Challenge - ten things you can do to lessen your ecological footprint. Suzuki's foundation also has ongoing efforts to solve global warming, protect human health, promote global conservation, and to build a sustainable economy. (And the 70 year-old even has a MySpace page).

Sounds like a great guy… does anyone else think he looks like Pat Moriat of Mr. Miyagi fame?

If a National Energy Program is put in place, let's hope it is better than the last one in 1980!
